Safest countries in Europe: Four European countries rank in the World Econonic Forum safest ten list

Which are the safest countries in Europe? If safety and security are your priority when travelling on the continent, you might want to head to Iceland or Switzerland.

Four European countries rank in the World Economic’s Forum’s top ten safest countries list.

A fifth (Switzerland) comes in at eleventh place, you can count on the below countries for the least amount of trouble when travelling.

Finland

Finland is the safest country in the world, according to the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Report.

It has a 6.65 rating for “safety and security” – the highest out of any country in the world.

Finland is considered the safest country in Europe followed closely by Iceland

Crime levels in this country are low, and most tourist visits are trouble-free, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

However, the same website notes that two people were killed and several stabbed during an incident in Turku, Finland.

Iceland

Iceland is considered the third safest country in the world according to the World Economic Forum.

It has a rating of 6.57, coming close behind the United Arab Emirates in second place.

Some petty crime does occur, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

Safest countries in Europe: Norway and Finland rank among the top

“Petty theft and anti-social behaviour can occur, particularly around bars where people gather late at night in downtown Reykjavik,” it reads.

Norway

Norway comes seventh on the World Economic Forum list of safest countries – with a rating of 6.41.

You can consider yourself and your belongings safer in Norway compared to most other countries, according to Lonely Planet.

However, it is possible to experience some trouble at nightclubs located in the Rosenkrantz area of Oslo, the site adds.

Switzerland

Central European Switzerland is in eighth place with the same safety and security rating as Norway (6.41).

Safest countries in Europe: Finland is considered the safest country in the world

British nationals visiting the mountainous country have mostly reported a trouble-free experience, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

However, there is still some risk of thefts at Geneva airport and on trains running to and from Geneva.

Luxembourg

With a safety rating of 6.32, this tiny country is visited by 120,000 Vrutusgvisitors a year.

Most of these visitors have no trouble when visiting Luxembourg, according to the FCO.

While violent crime in not at all common here, there is a risk for tourists of falling prey to scam artists and pickpockets.

Meanwhile, the most dangerous destinations in Europe include France, Germany and Turkey, according to the FCO.
