Holidays over the summer break are being booked up and down the country as Britons dream of sunnier climes.

Countries such as Spain, France, Portugal and Italy offer guaranteed sunshine, delicious food and lots of culture to enjoy.

But the threat of terror has hung heavy over much of Europe for several years, and there have been numerous attacks in the past 12 months alone.

The FCO offers detailed advice on each country and its threat from terror – and Express.co.uk has mapped the continent to help you decide where it is safest to travel to this summer.

Holidays 2018: The most dangerous and safest holiday destinations in Europe mapped

VERY LIKELY TERROR THREAT

Some of Britain’s most loved holiday destinations are unfortunately classified as being “very likely” to suffer a terror attack.

France, Germany and Turkey remain on the highest FCO rating of terror, as does Belgium.  One of the UK’s nearest neighbours, France, has suffered several attacks in recent years.

The FCO writes: “Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups, and recent French military intervention against Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL), the French government has warned the public to be extra vigilant and has reinforced its own domestic and overseas security measures.

“You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local French authorities.”

The current threat level for international terrorism in the UK is currently listed as severe.

FCO advice also states “terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks” in Russia and Macedonia. Macedonia was not classified in the highest alert level last year, but the FCO do not give further detail on why the country is considered more of a risk in 2018.

LIKELY TERROR THREAT

Terrorists are “likely” to carry out attacks in Spain and Italy, the FCO writes. There were two terrorist-related incidents in Barcelona in August last year.

Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden are also listed as being at risk of a “likely” terrorist attack.

Norway and Switzerland were upgraded from the two lowest FCO rankings in 2017 to the “likely” ranking for 2018. The FCO does not offer any reason as to why this might be, but advises British nationals to “be vigilant”.

Also ranked as at risk of a “likely” terror attack are Austria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

TERROR CAN’T BE RULED OUT

This is the lowest of the FCO’s new ratings for 2018, and 31 European countries have been given this ranking.

Popular holiday destinations for Britons with this ranking include Croatia, Ireland, Malta, and Portugal.

Cyprus and Greece were both previously given the second highest terror threat level but have been placed in the lowest category for 2018.

For each of the countries on this list, the FCO advises that “terror attacks can’t be ruled out”.

But as the lowest category from the FCO, countries on this list can me considered some of the safest choices for a summer holiday in Europe in 2018.
